Johnathon Swift believes that the poverty, famine, and overpopulation in Ireland is all because of the babies who are being born into families that truly are not financially able to take care of themselves, or a family. He believes all of these extra babies,that can't even be well-cared for, are causing overpopulation, which ultimately leads the nation to famine and poverty. Swift says,"that it will prevent those voluntary abortions, and that horrid practice of women murdering their bastard children, alas! too frequent among us!" This leads me to believe that he identifies with the Irish; in this context he says "us". I think he is trying to fix the problems within his own social and societal group.
The potato famine was pretty much caused by mainly two reasons. The potato famine came about because a disease spread througout the Irish's most important and main crop, the potato.All of the potatos went bad. Due to the English opression, it was impossible to get food any other way. The English were on the waters so the Irish could not fish. The Irish had no way of getting food; some of the poor folk were so desperate for food that they ate the rotten potatos just because their stomach hurt so bad from lack of food. These same people got sick and died.

"Irony"can be defined as an expression or utterance marked by a deliberate contrast between apparent and intended meaning; however, a better way to describe "irony" in this instance is the following: a literary style used by authors that used such contrast for a witty or rehtorical effect. Irony can also be used to surprise or shock an audience; it is , in this case, used to grab an audience's attention to a subject by using exaggeration, sarcasm, and other tools to directly shock them into thinking about and perusing the subject at hand. Such contrast and ridiculousness is used, that the audience cannot help but see wit in the difference in between their realistic beliefs and what is being said.In certain kinds of situational or historical irony that occur outside works of fiction, a factual truth is highlighted by some person's complete ignorance, or belief in the opposite, of it's catches your attention directly because such twechniques as this, spark the human rain into saying, "hey, wait a minute...you just sed that you felt the opposite...". In a satire, Irony has a particular purpose;it is used to grab an audinece's attention, not to sway them to your belifs, but rather to bring their attention to the subject at hand. In a satire, the author starts out by representing a topic or problem that he wishes to address; then he gives his beliefs aout the topic, before even proposing his ridiculous idea. And usually, in order to actually make the article important, his beliefs on the topic are very thorough and correct and easy for a citizen to connect to. Now if an author were to give good, thorough opinions about a problem in society, and then totally contadict himself, this would set an audience off. This would make them think, "hey this is stupid...I bet I could come up with a better resolution". And then the author's purpose is fullfilled because his audience is really thinking about the topic.
The propser and Swift in A Modest Proposal are quite different from eachother. This is because Swift would not suggest that we kill and eat babies in order to fix over population and poverty. He is really trying to help the people of Ireland, not kill them. This is where the Irony comes into his Satire. What this article consists of is completely ridiculous!Swift is completely cotridicting huimself He is completely going against his own beliefs and realisticness in order to grab his audience's attention and to make them think about the social problems going on.

Immigration Project: Blog 3-Proposer/audience

In A Modest Proposal the proposer of the solution to Ireland's problem's was Johnathon Swift because he was the author. The audience of this piece of literature, known as a Satire, is the people of Ireland.Johnathon Swift proposes, in this article, that these people make changes and such to fix their problems such as poverty and overpopulation. During this time, the people of Ireland were going through a tragic period; there was so much poverty and overpopulation. People who did not have the means to take care of babies, were having children; this caused overpopulation. As a result, there was not enough food to feed everyone, and there was so much poverty. The terrible poverty and lack of food led to extreme amounts of theft. Thieves started out as young children who grew into criminals; children would steal just to fill their own stomaches. It was a horrible time in Ireland.
Johnathon Swift was a man who wrote this article, not with his own beliefs, but in the hopes that he could grab everyone's attention to the topic at hand and make them see how terrible it had gotten. He wrote a satire to get people to open their eyes; it was like he was shooting a bullet into the sky, he obviously didn't hit the target but he did get everyone's attention. In this article, Swift flat out, suggests that the Irish eat their children to solve the problem of hunger and overpopulation. This is ridiculous.

The social and health issue that is being recognized in the Satire, A Modest Proposal, is that people who are not financially suitable to have children, are having babies. This is causing many problems because the mothers of these babies then have to go around as beggars to get food for them and thier large families. Also, then these babies grow up to be thieves, and they grow up to be trained theives at that. The fact that babies, who cannot be taken care of, are being born, is an overpopulation problem. This is also causing a lack of enough food which ultimately causes there to be more poor people and beggars.As it is, there is a problem of fam,ine because of the alleged Potato famine which ruined their food supply; the English Opression has made it impossible fior them to get food any other way. The author attacks this issue with a completely ridiculous resolution which includes sending off these babies, that cannot be taken care of, to be eaten in Ireland. Such a ridiculous proposition can easily get an audiences attention.It doesn't matter if the viewers or audience think the idea is crazy because the issue will come clearer into their mind andd they will start to think, "Now what IS a suitable resolution". Then the author's purpose and reason for writing the document has been filled.

Immigration Project: Blog 1-Satire

A satire is a spoof on a social problem or controversal topic. Satires can come in any form of literature; the writer of the piece usually ridicules some argumentative topic of that time. The auther will use such ridiculous and ubsurd propositions to get their point across, that it actually works. There is alot of humor and sarascm included in these spoofs; the humor is attacked upon something that the satirist severely dissaproves of. These satires also include a touch of irony, along with their wit. In these pieces of literature, the author intends to improve the social problem which he so strongly disagrees with, but in reality, his resolution goes against his beliefs and reasons for dislikeing the initial problem. Naturally, this is where the irony comes in.
A Modest Proposal does in fact qualify as a Satire because of many characterstics that match up. A Modest Proposal is attacking a socialistic problem that is seversly disagreed upon, on the author's part. He also suggests a truly ridiclous solution which includes sending off babies to Ireland to be eaten. This goes against his whole reason for writing the article in the first place which was to help these people and prevent their need for stealing, not to kill them. A Modest Proposal definately qualifies as a Satire.
